"Moving On: The Importance of Disability Justice in Post-War Laos"
Abstract/Contents
- Abstract
- For her human rights capstone project, Gwen Phagnasay Le built upon her senior thesis work where she traveled to Laos to conduct research on transitional justice in the post-Secret War context and interview local people about the continued impacts of the war and their vision for justice and reparation. Her capstone features an original art piece inspired by these interviews as well as a trip to the Cooperative Orthotic and Prosthetic Enterprise (COPE) where she encountered an installation art piece of used prosthetic legs hanging in rows from the ceiling. Her capstone painting shows illustrated versions of the prosthetics and depicts rice plants tucked into each of the legs. This represents the testimonials of people who during their interviews recalled their experiences of disabling accidents while farming for rice or foraging for food in the jungle. Instead of "moving on" the artwork seeks to challenge the notion that it is the responsibility of the victim to move on without proper justice by replacing the caption with the phrase "No Justice Without Reparation."
