Abstract
Feeding habits play a large role in determining the migration and ecological interactions of the Scombrid fishes. The diets of such fish can also serve as an indicator of local diversity on the lower trophic levels. Relatively little is currently known about the diets of scombrids in the central Pacific Ocean. This study, through the analysis of the stomach contents from twenty different individuals and the surveying of epipelagic organisms through one-meter net tows, sought to establish a general overview of what organisms are being consumed by the scombrids in this region and to determine whether their diets correspond with the local epipelagic organisms. Comparing the frequencies of prey among three groups of fish from Palmyra, Hawaii, and the intervening oceanic transect revealed that the scombrid prey are predominantly found in the epipelagic zone. There is, however, a lack of correspondence between the frequencies of organisms in the stomachs and the frequencies of organisms in the tows, suggesting a form of selective feeding that is more prevalent in Palmyra than in Hawaii or along the transect.
