Abstract
This dissertation provides a history of the East India Company's opium trade in Asia from the creation of a monopoly in Bengal in 1773 to the outbreak of the First Opium War in 1839. It examines debates over the commodification of opium in Bengal to explain the origins of the "imperialism of free trade.".
