Virtual field trip to the Hewatt transect at Hopkins Marine Station
Abstract/Contents
- Abstract
- These videos are intended to provide an introduction to the Hewatt Transect at Hopkins Marine Station, especially with regards to virtual teaching modules on rocky intertidal shores, long-term monitoring, and historical ecology. This work was funded by an NSF Research Coordination Network in Undergraduate Biology Education (#2018116): Diversifying and Integrating Marine Education at Stations (DIMES). The goal of the DIMES network is to create a unified curriculum that documents change in marine biodiversity through time while combining fieldwork and computational literacy in undergraduate education. This network leverages the existing undergraduate teaching at participating marine laboratories and expands their reach to new students who lack access to experiential learning in the field. The central and long-term philosophy in our approach is to create a unified repository of field images and videos that will form the basis for the collection of raw data by students in virtual courses, conceivably far-removed from the coast.
