Abstract
For his human rights capstone project, Ahmed Moutwakil conducted research on the implementation of Essential Newborn Care (ENC), which is a process of evidence-based neonatal interventions to ensure the health and survival of newborns, to analyze how in settings of humanitarian crisis and conflict neonatal mortality risk increases substantially among affected populations. Ahmed further shows how the limited systematic evidence on ENC implementation hinders the development of effective interventions and he aims to investigate the specific aspects, components, and features of ENC implementation that have been documented in settings of high-intensity armed conflict and humanitarian crisis. Through this project, he provides recommendations and highlights the need for future research to adapt current guidelines to most effectively deliver interventions in these settings, and how to prioritize context-specific ENC interventions to improve neonatal outcomes.
