The Methanol Alternative for Producing Potential Gas Fields North of the 62nd Parallel on the Norwegian Continental Shelf
Abstract/Contents
- Abstract
- The current energy situation in the world is difficult and we do not know what we will face in the future when our oil and gas supplies run out. Until then, however, it is important to use whatever we have wisely. This report proposes a new method for producing offshore natural gas, gas that cannot be produced by today's existing approaches since they are not economically feasible. The system proposed is designed with the Norwegian Continental Shelf north of the 62nd parallel in mind. Compared to the North Sea, which today i s the world's most expensive offshore theatre, the prices north of the 62nd parallel are going to be even higher, production schemes if this potential oil and gas shall be recovered. Therefore, there is a definite need for lower cost production schemes if this potential oil and gas shall be recovered. The production system proposed in the present report which consists of a prestressed, reinforced concrete barge with a methanol plant on it, (for converting the natural gas into methanol), is discussed in detail, represent a considerable saving compared to the conventional use of fixed platforms and pipelines. In a separate section on economics, this system is found to There also a r e separate sections on the North Sea, Norwegian policy, and the potential of the Norwegian Shelf north of the 62nd parallel. Finally, we will look at how methanol is produced and what possible uses it has. Considering methanol uses, a large market for the methanol could develop by using it as a gasoline extender.
