Abstract
This thesis explores the external validity of existing findings on three important questions in political economics. In the first chapter, I explore whether partisans show the same willingness to engage in discriminatory behavior in natural settings as they do in laboratory experiments and surveys. In the second chapter, I leverage a unique change in the US federal tax code to determine whether legislator compensation has a detectable impact on political competition. In the third chapter, I analytically and empirically examine the interpretation of a commonly used research design for studying the importance of politician background characteristics. In each case, I extend our understanding of these problems by probing the scope of prior research
