- James Wilson (1986, MS Computer Science) explains how he began volunteering at the Arizona Garden in the early 2000s in the wake of the dot.com crash and describes some of the responsibilities of the volunteer gardeners, including weeding, raking, re-planting, and watering plants and protecting them from heavy rain. He also recounts the historical roots of the garden and its connection to Jane Stanford and describes notable plants, how he and the local community interact with the garden, and the various approaches to working with cacti and succulents that he has learned over the years.

Biographical Profile | James Wilson came to Stanford in 1984 from Central Illinois to study Computer Science. After graduating, he was a lecturer in the newly formed Undergraduate Computer Science program. After the dot.com crash, he started volunteering at the Stanford Arizona Garden. In retirement, his focus is now on care of pet rabbits in the Bay Area, but he still volunteers at the Arizona Garden. He and his family have lived at their house in College Terrace since 1993. His yard contains a large variety of succulents. |
