- In this interview, Robert F. DeBusk, MD, shares memories of his friend John W. Gardner and reflects on Gardner’s legacy. DeBusk, a professor emeritus of cardiology at Stanford, speaks briefly about his undergraduate years at Stanford and describes the circumstances that led him to a career in cardiology. He talks about the friendship he and his wife, Ann, developed with John and Aida Gardner upon the Gardners’ return to California from Washington, DC. He offers insights into Gardner’s character and personality, describes his involvement with the Silicon Valley chapter of the American Leadership Forum, and recalls the waning days of Gardner’s life.

Biographical profile | Robert F. DeBusk, MD, is Professor of Cardiovascular Medicine, Emeritus, at the Stanford University School of Medicine. Educated at Stanford and Harvard Universities, he spent two years at the Public Service Hospital in Baltimore and two years in the private practice of internal medicine and cardiology in San Francisco before joining the faculty of the Stanford University School of Medicine. In 1973 DeBusk founded (and continues to direct) the Stanford Cardiac Rehabilitation Program, which focuses on developing more effective methods of managing chronic diseases. His major interests include the development of case management systems to facilitate chronic disease management including hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and congestive heart failure; modification of coronary risk factors after acute myocardial infarction; and evaluation of the efficacy of guidelines for the management of patients hospitalized with acute myocardial infarction. DeBusk is the author of over one hundred peer-reviewed scientific publications, and he consults nationally and internationally on many aspects of cardiovascular disease. He continues to attend on patients hospitalized for treatment of cardiovascular disease at Stanford Hospital and Clinics. |
