Analysis of Absolute Permeability Work- Past and Present
Abstract/Contents
- Abstract
- In trying to represent reservoir conditions in the laboratory, simplifying assumptions of the past are now being questioned. Previously it was assumed that permeabilities were not dependent on temperature. Recent work by several researchers has shown that this assumption is not valid.Experimental work has shown that a reduction in permeability to water in consolidated and unconsolidated sandstones results from increasing temperature and confining pressure. The maximum reduction from room temperature permeability measured was on the order of 60% at 300F.The purpose of this work is three-fold. The first is a compilation of related works. Before actual results are discussed, the theories to explain these results are presented. This will give some idea of what the results represent to the respective researchers. Then the results for each work are given and the conditions under which they were obtained.Several studies have been done on the same or similar equipment. The second purpose of this report is to study the equipment, analyze the precision of the equipment and the accuracy of its use to determine the accuracy of the results obtained. A sensitivity analysis will also be done to determine the best (most effective) place for equipment improvement. The third section of this paper will include a conclusion developed from the theories and results presented. The design of an optimal apparatus for determining the necessary parameters for verification of the theories will be discussed. This should suggest directions for further research.
