Abstract
In 1986, the Concrete Reinforcing Steel Institute sponsored a project entitled, "Fundamental Period of Reinforced Concrete Moment Resisting Frame Structures” (Ref. 1). The investigators of that project were Professor Vitelmo Bertero of the University of California at Berkeley, Professor Haresh Shah and Dr. Fouad Bendimerad of Stanford University. In that study, fifteen reinforced concrete frame buildings were studed. Based on the data available on those buildings, it was shown that the formulas T = .035 (hn)3/4 and T = 0. lN represented lower limits of the period of reinforced concrete frame structures. Important earthquake events have occurred in California since that 1986 study. These events have provided additional data on building response to strong earthquake motions and have triggered several studies on earthquake building response. These data and studies are reviewed in this report to update and improve our understanding of the period of reinforced concrete moment resisting frame structures and to provide a better understanding of the dynamic behavior of reinforced concrete moment resisting frame structures.
