Florens: A Web-Based Guided Learning Experience Focused on Teacher Thriving
Abstract/Contents
- Abstract
- Teacher well-being is fundamental to students' success. Teacher burnout, however, is a growing problem with multiple negative consequences. It affects the health and performance of educators and their willingness to remain in the profession. While the burnout syndrome is associated with common systemic factors, scholarship considers interventions at the individual level as entry points for preventing and reducing burnout. In this sense, positive psychologists argue for solutions focused on helping individuals to develop skills that promote a sense of energy, engagement, and accomplishment. Drawing from positive psychology, Florens is a web-based guided learning experience centered on strategies that can lead teachers to thrive. Educators join a community of fellow practitioners and receive guidance from a well-being expert to learn six core practices: (i) identifying values, (ii) assessing the current state of their values in their lives, (iii) defining aspirations, (iv) creating and (v) implementing value-laden small concrete actions, and (vi) reflecting on the experience. Data from Florens’ pilot indicates the solution can help teachers significantly increase their sense of well-being, and effectively learn the techniques that help them experience a sense of energy, engagement, and accomplishment. Results also reveal that educators consider it to be a valuable learning experience for themselves and fellow practitioners.
