Abstract
This file contains an op-ed and a writer's reflection on that process. The op-ed was written for a local newspaper in Southwest Florida with the intent of increasing understanding of how bi/multilinguals use language and modifying our classrooms to recognize student strengths. In 2023, Lee County was undergoing many rapid changes like population growth and an increase in bilingual students. The op-ed seeks to respond to this historical moment and connect the community with relevant research on bilingualism. The author is herself from this community. The writer's memo shares reflections on writing and editing the op-ed as well as the faculty support received in the process.
