TR163: Modeling Systemic Innovation in Design and Construction Networks
Abstract/Contents
- Abstract
- The A/E/C (architecture, engineering and construction) industry is the largest industry in the world and is often described as a laggard industry in adopting new products and processes. This second year CIFE Seed Grant project report presents research completed to date on the mechanisms impacting innovation diffusion and implementation in design and construction networks. In general, our "Bridging the Innovation Gap" research focuses on product and process innovations of a systemic nature (i.e., those that require multiple specialist firms to change their process in a coordinated fashion). In this second year report we present the findings of a cross-national investigation of 82 A/E/C firms implementing a systemic innovation in object-based 3D CAD. We use the findings to develop a grounded theoretical model for systemic innovation in design and construction networks that extends previous theories of innovation. By gaining insight into the mechanisms and processes that impact systemic innovation in the A/E/C industry, we take first steps toward bridging the innovation gap in this industry.
