Development of a Flux Chamber for Measurement and Analysis of Greenhouse Gas Emissions from Indonesian Peatlands

Abstract
The peatlands are the most important ecosystem we have in our fight against climate change due to the billions of tons of greenhouse gas emissions they sequester. Over recent years however, their strength has been nullified, as a high percentage of peatlands have been drained for agricultural purposes, thus causing them to emit the gases they were otherwise sequestering. It is for this reason that in recent years a greater emphasis has been placed on acquiring concrete measurements on the flux of greenhouse gases in the peatlands. Due to limitations in the accuracy and accessibility of current flux measuring technology however, it is difficult for researchers to obtain reliable measurements. It is for this reason that For Peat’s Sake, in parallel with the Stanford Precourt Institute, has worked to develop a flux measuring device with the reliability of mass manufactured devices while being much more affordable. We have done this by using as many widely accessible industrial materials, and premade sensors in our build as possible, and 3D-printing custom parts to interface with these materials when needed. It is our hope that our work can help make the monitoring of peatland emissions easier for researchers and aid in our fight against climate change.
