Abstract
Xavier Vazquez’s human rights capstone project critically examines the current “warehouse industry” in the California Inland Empire and how this has come about through various social and political phenomenon such as land development, neighborhood displacement, and economics. Through interviews with local Inland Empire residents, Xavier traces how this region became known as a "wasteland" and became a place of modern colonization and a development project designed to uplift wealthier, often whiter, communities. Furthermore, he tackles the historical development of the Inland Empire into a “warehouse industry” and discusses its history to analyze the methodology of previous and current Inland Empire stakeholders, its disproportionate effect on minorities, and its consequences on its residents. Highlighting the lived experiences of relevant Inland Empire residents, such as warehouse workers, developers, and public officials, Xavier also provides discussion on the nuances of a warehouse economy and establishes recommendations regarding the future state of the Inland Empire to build a better home for future residents.
