TinyTales
Abstract/Contents
- Abstract
- As children return to school after mass social isolation during the pandemic, schools all over the country report a noticeable decline in student’s socio-emotional development. These patterns show up in increased classroom disruptions from student misconduct, rowdiness outside the classroom, and acts of disrespect to teachers and staff. Educators and policymakers alike are looking to social emotional education to equip children with the skills to deal with a variety of conflicts and emotions. Unfortunately, current SEL curriculum in schools lack an experiential component that sustains the focused attention of children. Additionally, qualitative research of interviews with teachers indicates that they do not feel prepared or have the bandwidth to teach SEL within structured subjects and standards. TinyTales is a social emotional learning solution that is both engaging with its stories, characters, and digital interactions and easily implementable in a classroom or home setting. Through TinyTales, learners make choices for characters and encounter realistic social situations that equip them with the tools to navigate real life scenarios. Through mapping the design process recounting different versions of this design, this study demonstrates that TinyTales can engage young learners in socio-emotional topics.
