Abstract
A case for the abolition of immigration detention centers in the United States using the framework of prison abolition studies. This paper presents an argument using evidence from legal, historical, psychological, and cultural perspectives across various mediums to acknowledge the institutionalization of an immigration detention-industrial complex modeled and proliferated along the better recognized prison-industrial complex. Research across academic disciplines reveal a disproportionate imprisonment of black and brown people in relation to population---residue of buried histories of racial violence that procreated structures to sustain and proliferate a punitive society post formal recognition of slavery. A critical understanding of the role race plays in law enforcement can inform development of new resources and institutions in tune with local communities’ specific needs to protect communities most persecuted by law enforcement efforts. An intercommunity accountability system phases out the need to cage adults and children to death.
