Abstract
Research on social norms has demonstrated that perceived social norms can be a powerful force that shapes behavior, however in order to understand the how to best use social norms to guide behavior change, research must first examine how social norms themselves are perceived. This dissertation examines how individuals infer social norms when they enter a new group or situation. Across three chapters, this dissertation presents a framework (Chapter 1) and two investigations (Chapters 2 and 3) of social norm perception in small groups and teams.
