Abstract
This project examines the preface, especially the dedication and epistle to readers, in Renaissance books. Its primary claim is that the preface, despite being a marginal element of the book, played a central role in the development of literary and print culture in early modern England. It demonstrates how prefaces shaped the practices of reading, publishing, and authoring books during a period when the nature and conventions of those activities were still unsettled. Moreover, this project brings the preface's significance to bear on issues such as Renaissance humanism, periodization and early modernity, early modern authorship, and dramatic publication.
