Abstract

Inferactive is a tool designed to help journalists tell stories with data. It is a free and open source web application where a user can upload a column-based dataset like a CSV file and then rapidly iterate possible visualizations, visualizations which could inform a news story or summarize significant trends or outliers in the data.

The premise is that the process of discovery in the world of data is an inherently hard problem for computers but a more intuitive one for humans. By presenting an interface where the user can quickly scan and iterate visualizations and story ideas, Inferactive hopes to bridge this divide in service of news story discovery.
