Abstract
This book is not so much a history of earthquake engineering as it is a history of IAEE itself. We have refrained from treating the entire development of earthquake engineering in this narrative because that would require a much broader space than is possible in this book that focuses on the role played by IAEE in the growth of the field. The international story of the development of the scientific and technological aspects of earthquake engineering is described by Bertero and Bozorgnia2, Freeman3, Hudson4, Reitherman5, and Scawthorn6. The quadrennial IAEE-endorsed world conferences on earthquake engineering are now routinely attended by thousands of participants, but the role of those who played key roles in the creation of the Association is not well known. We focus here on the early years and the germination of the ideas through exchanges among those who were present at the first two World Conferences, and who went on to establish IAEE. A half-century after its occurrence, it is not easy to reconstruct on the basis of a few documents and anecdotal stories, the exact path that the Association followed during its formative years, but an informative and lively description is provided by George W. Housner (Figure 2) in the interview he gave for the EERI Oral History series.7
