Interview with Liat Applewhite : Oral History of Aurora Project
Abstract/Contents
- Abstract
- Liat Applewhite (AB American Studies, 1980) shares her experiences working to produce and distribute Aurora. As a Black woman and founding member of the primarily female collective, she reflects on the positive social impact Aurora had on her life and how it informed her political awareness. At a time when there were few Black students at Stanford, she discusses how the exposure to feminist and cross-cultural ideals led her to grapple with questions about gender separatism and racial identity. She also reflects on the joys and frustrations of the collective process and how external pressures to appeal to a broader audience and improve circulation drove changes in publishing strategy--potentially towards less radical content.
