Abstract

The Learning Space Rating System (LSRS) provides a framework to measure the potential performance of a learning space, that is, to assess what the space enables learners and instructors to do in it. It serves as a way to measure progress toward designing learning spaces that support active learning and engagement. It also provides the higher education community with a common language and method to document best practices.

The LSRS v2.0 measures formal learning spaces—those designed to accommodate face-to-face scheduled meetings of all participants. It provides a set of credits that assess not only the design of individual rooms but also the planning, support, evaluation, and strategic alignment that are crucial to the success of the learning that occurs in a learning space. Recognizing that there is great diversity in teaching and learning, the LSRS does not seek to prescribe specific teaching and learning practices but rather to evaluate a room’s ability to support a broad range of those practices.
