Abstract
Benzotriazole is a persistent organic contaminant of emerging concern. Commonly used as an anticorrosive and UV-inhibiting agent as well as in deicing processes, Benzotriazole has many pathways into the urban environment. Because of its persistence and microbial recalcitrance, Benzotriazole accumulates in the urban environment at environmentally relevant concentrations. This study aims to understand the fate and transport of Benzotriazole in bench-scale constructed subsurface wetlands planted with native California species, Carex praegracilis, while also quantifying the removal of Benzotriazole from the wetland system due to phytotransformation. To date, four storm events have been simulated, two with high doses of Benzotriazole (1 mg/L). Results indicate that Carex praegracilis is impacting the flux of Benzotriazole through the system.
