Biographical/Historical | Donald Stewart Lucas (1926-1998) was involved with the Mattachine Society, a gay rights organization headquartered in San Francisco, California in the 1950s and early 60s. These 45 open reel audio tapes originated from a collection of Lucas's papers housed at the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Historical Society. Many were recorded by Lucas himself. Harold "Hal" Call, who was MS president through these years, participates in most recordings, which chronicle annual conferences and meetings of the Society from 1954 to 1965 as well as educational programs produced by the Mattachine Society in 1962. There are also recordings of related broadcasts of San Francisco and Los Angeles radio & television programs. Other organizations in the collection include various local chapters of the Society, as well as the Daughters of Bilitis, One, Incorporated, the Society for Individual Rights, the Council on Religion and Homosexuality, and the San Francisco Tavern Guild. |
