Abstract
This thesis explores Asian American playwrights’ resistance against Asian American stereotypes of silence and compares their rhetorical and semantic techniques to those of White American playwrights. It applies a digital humanities approach to the analysis of spoken emotions as expressed by a vast corpus of Asian American plays. Methods include a comparative topic model of the two ethnic corpuses and a sentiment analysis using a dictionary tailored to the corpus of late 20th century Asian American and White American plays using a Naïve Bayesian model. The thesis seeks to place the Asian American theater corpus in history and in American literary tradition as a piece of cultural activist resistance and community reclamation. Sentiment analyses and topic models reveal the semantic nuance to the subtle emotional activism used by Asian American playwrights.
