Abstract
Music is a central component to various cultures around the world, and its importance in Latin cultures is no exception. As an art form, music serves as a space where creativity can blossom, language can be toyed with, meaning can be made, and act as a tool for change within and between communities. The versatility of music is one of the properties that makes it such a powerful tool to enact change on various levels–it can be used as a form of resistance, or a way of acting as a united front. It can create changes on personal, interpersonal, and societal levels. Therefore, the power of music within communities is evident in its ability to stir the inner workings of a person or group of people and sway their thoughts and beliefs in a potentially different direction. In this webpage series, a variety of 8 songs will be explored and analyzed for their significance to the Latin community and how they affect their audiences. Additionally, the ways these songs create meaning, community, and their use as tools of resistance or healing will be explored.
