Bob Fitch photography archive -- Santa Fe, New Mexico Murals
Abstract/Contents
- Abstract
- On a trip to New Mexico, photographer Bob Fitch was enthralled by the work of Chicano muralist group Los Artes Guadalupanos de Aztlán (1971-1977), who organized the local community to collectively create and display giant public murals depicting their heritage and hopes. Los Artes was founded in 1971 by Samuel, Albert (deceased 2006) and Carlos Leyba after their youngest brother George's death from a heroin overdose, and formally began with a children's mural in his memory. Employing youth from a methadone program (then called El Vicio) the group created several striking murals in the Santa Fe area, most notably for a high school and a health clinic. Other members of Los Artes Guadalupanos included Geronimo Garduno (deceased 2008), Gilberto Guzman, Pancho Hunter and Joey Gomez.
