Abstract
The (re)contamination of surface waters and sediment from stormwater runoff is a major concern at Department of Defense (DoD) facilities. Decentralized, rapid- flow geomedia biofilters may be an attractive solution for treating stormwater runoff at these sites. Commonly found contaminants at DoD facilities targeted in this study include: polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polycyclic aromatic hydro- carbons (PAHs), per- and polyfluoroalkyl compounds (PFASs), heavy metals, and a suite of hydrophilic organic compounds. Biofilters with black carbon, such as biochar and regenerated activated carbon, and zeolite/carbonate sand amendments will be tested at the lab-scale for contaminant removal at various infiltration rates. Rapid-flow geomedia biofilters have numerous applications apart from use at DoD facilities, and may play an important role more broadly in urban stormwater control strategies.
