Pinning Down Narrative; or, Wrestling in the Novels of John Irving
Abstract/Contents
- Abstract
- This thesis tackles the contexts and effects of sports within various forms of literature, using the work of American novelist John Irving as a case study. The thesis focuses on the enterprise of wrestling, and how the sport functions as a narrative device in Irving's novels, both to facilitate characterization and narrative structure. Drawing on Roland Barthes' "Mythologies," the work creates a framework for reading wrestling within the novel, and participates in a close reading of "The World According to Garp" and "The 158-Pound Marriage."
