Abstract

This abstract provides an overview of a study conducted on the implementation and impact of the mental health counseling program in the Redwood City School District. The study aimed to understand the role of mental health counselors in supporting the mental well-being and academic success of students. Through interviews with administrators and counselors, several key findings emerged.

The study highlighted the importance of counselors in addressing student needs and supporting mental health and well-being. Counselors played a crucial role in providing individualized support, facilitating crisis response, and coordinating care effectively. They contributed to reducing disruptions in classrooms, improving the quality of teaching and learning, and strengthening the school-family connection during challenging situations.

The findings also emphasized the need for expanded Tier 1 support to ensure all students have access to care. Counselors primarily focused on providing support to specific students, leaving some students with uneven access. The study recommended additional Tier 1 opportunities, such as implementing PBIS, Kognito, and a wellbeing center, to provide a base of support for all students.

Furthermore, the study emphasized the importance of integrating counselors into the school community and addressing low levels of service utilization. Building relationships, fostering trust, and increasing awareness of available services were identified as critical steps to increase utilization rates, particularly among marginalized groups. The study also called for collaborative efforts between schools, community organizations, and mental health providers to bridge gaps and enhance overall utilization of counseling services.

The study highlighted the need for sustained focus on mental health and well-being by establishing funding, data systems, and dedicated spaces for well-being centers. Additionally, it emphasized the importance of ongoing research to explore areas such as crisis detection, student utilization of services, and tailored support for students with disabilities.

Overall, the study underscored the district's commitment to supporting the mental health and well-being of its diverse student population. By actively involving stakeholders, leveraging data, and prioritizing collaboration, the district aims to continue improving its mental health counseling program to meet the evolving needs of students, families, and communities.
