Abstract
A huge supply of natural gas exists at Prudhoe Bay yet there is no existing way of transporting this resource to market. This report compares the two most promising methods of transporting this gas. First, there is the Alaska Natural Gas Transportation System (ANGTS), a 4800-mile gas pipeline stretching from Prudhoe Bay to the lower 48 states. Secondly, it is proposed that the gas be converted to methanol using barge mounted methanol plants (BMMPs) at Prudhoe Bay and transporting the methanol through the existing Alpeska oil pipeline to Valdez where i t can be distributed to world markets. On the basis of these comparisons, we mag make several conclusions. First, the use of BMMPs would be incremental meaning plants could be added as needed at Prudhoe Bay. As opposed to the pipeline, these plants could be removed to other locations at a later time.Secondly, the implementation of the methanol alternative would require a much smaller capital investment than ANGTS. The delivered cost of the gas through ANGTS ($12/Mcf) would exceed the expected price of competitive gas sources in the lower 48 states ($6/Mcf) while methanol could be delivered at a cost which is less than its current selling price.Lastly, the methanol alternative appears t o have a problem because conversion of all the natural gas at Prudhoe Bay could flood the world methanol market. Thus, additional markets will need to be developed. It is recommended that BMMPs be implemented at Prudhoe Bay on a trial basis paying close attention to their engineering and economic feasibility.
