- The Olivetan Master (Milan, c. 1430) Saint Ambrose (123 x 110) in an initial S. The artist was an Olivetan monk. His work is known through manuscripts in the Bodleian Library at Oxford and the Beinecke Library at Yale. Other miniatures can be found at the BnF, the Cini Collection in Venice, the ex-Longhi Collection in Florence, and the National Gallery in Washington D.C. This miniature is previously unpublished. The half-length figure portrays Saint Ambrose, the fourth-century bishop of Milan, clad in his ceremonial vestments with his crozier and bishop’s mitre. He is holding his emblem, the whip, the symbol of his assertiveness, with the three cords signifying the Trinity.
