Marta Hanson : Interview for Stanford Community Women's March Oral History Project
Abstract/Contents
- Abstract
Marta Hanson (2011 BA American Studies & Feminist Studies) recalls her experiences attending the Women’s March in Washington, DC. She begins by talking about campaigning for Hillary Clinton before the 2016 election and the shock and dismay she felt after the election. She describes her prior involvement with issues related to women, gender, and activism, including her studies in feminist theory and history and her participation in the Stanford Theater Activist Mobilization Project during her student days. Hanson discusses hosting events at the Women’s Community Center, where she currently works as the associate director, to help prepare Stanford students to attend marches.
Recounting the day of the march in DC, Hanson movingly recalls putting on jewelry that represented the important women in her life. She describes the crowds at the march and her unique vantage point that allowed her to hear and see the inspiring speakers and performers that were part of the program. She also discusses her post-march involvement and attending an event hosted by EMILY’s List and other organizations in the days following the march.
Hanson graduated from Stanford in 2011 with degrees in American Studies and Feminist Studies. She has been the assistant dean and associate director of the Women’s Community Center at Stanford since 2015.
