Margaret Hernandez : Estánfor: Our Voices
Abstract/Contents
- Abstract
- In this oral history, Margaret Hernandez (AB Anthropology, 1975) speaks about her undergraduate years at Stanford and her involvement in founding Ballet Folklórico de Stanford. She reflects on the importance of the leadership development experiences she gained as a student, including fundraising for the dance group’s performances for Cinco de Mayo and the Chicano graduation, interacting with staff members Cecilia Burciaga and Ray Bacchetti, and serving as a student representative for several university search committees. She advises current Latino students to connect with the Latino community at Stanford and not try to go it alone and says, “Don’t be intimidated. Know that you do have a right to be here.” After graduating from Stanford, Hernandez held various administrative positions at Stanford and then worked for the city and the port of Los Angeles in contract selection and procurement, small business development and training, and outreach to local businesses to promote diversity in contractor selections. She retired in 2010 but continues to give back to her community today. She is honorary mayor of Wilmington, California, and sits on the boards of several community groups. She has also been an active Rotarian for thirty years.
