Note | Part of 2 hemisphere map of the world, entitled: Kunyu chuantu (Konyo Zenzu) : [Complete map of the world] / Ferdinand Verbiest. -- Peking, [1674]. In Chinese. Woodcut. California as a large island with indented northern coast, and North America extending to north and west. The Great Lakes are shown as one large lake. The seas are shaded. Deliniation of China based on Chinese maps; European sources for the rest. Vignettes of animals (including the turkey and beaver), birds, ships and sea monsters decorate the map, including Antarctica, which is shown as large land mass. 9 large (and many smaller) blocks of text are within the map border, and 4 more are at sheet corners. These describe traditional beliefs concerning cosmography, astronomy, magnetism, vulcanology, among other subjects. |
