José R. Padilla : Estánfor: Our Voices
Abstract/Contents
- Abstract
- In this oral history, José Padilla (BA Psychology, 1974) talks about growing up in Imperial County, California, and shares his experiences as part of the second Stanford class with a large number of Chicano students. Padilla describes being a member of MEChA (Movimiento Estudiantil Chicanx de Aztlán), publishing a literary magazine entitled Miquitzli with English professor Arturo Islas, and serving in the first group of resident assistants at Casa Zapata. He also talks about his work as a political cartoonist for the Chicanismo newspaper and describes some of his favorite cartoons. Other topics include his involvement with the anti-Vietnam War and César Chávez movements, growing up around labor strikes as a child, and working for United Farm Workers and California Rural Legal Assistance (CRLA) during his college summers. After graduating from Stanford in 1974, Padilla went on to earn his JD from UC Berkeley Hastings College of Law. Today, his picture hangs in the Stanford Multicultural Hall of Fame while he continues to work as the executive director of CRLA and gives back to the Latinx community by speaking on panels and talking to students in Casa Zapata.
