Ricardo F. Muñoz : Estánfor: Our Voices
Abstract/Contents
- Abstract
- Ricardo F. Muñoz graduated from Stanford in 1972 with a degree in psychology. He later received his master’s and PhD degrees in clinical psychology from the University of Oregon. In this interview, he talks growing up in an immigrant family, his undergraduate experiences at Stanford, and his career in depression research and prevention including some of the innovative programs he started at San Francisco General Hospital. Muñoz immigrated to the Mission District in San Francisco from Peru with his family in 1961. He describes the impact that being an immigrant had on him, especially as the oldest son in his family. Muñoz attended St. Ignatius High School and aimed to attend a Catholic university and become a priest. Yet, he was won over to Stanford after an alumnus visited his home deeming him an “A candidate” and telling him about the opportunity to study abroad. During his time at Stanford in Vienna, Muñoz recalled protesting the Vietnam War at the US embassy and even writing a letter to Pope Paul VI on the subject, all of which heightened his interest in social justice. Muñoz goes into detail about what it was like to study at Stanford during the late 1960s and early 1970s as well as his love for psychology, which was further cultivated through his mentorship under Albert Bandura. One of his biggest projects has been making sure the same opportunities available to English-speakers are available to those who speak other languages. For four decades, Muñoz worked at San Francisco General Hospital cultivating new methods in preventing depression. He also speaks about developing the Ethnic Minority Issues Committee at the hospital, made up of the Latino Task Force, Asian Task Force, Women’s Task Force, and so on. Muñoz was inducted into the Stanford Alumni Hall of Fame in 2010. Today, he continues fostering his love for psychology as an emeritus psychology professor at the University of California, San Francisco. He also teaches at Palo Alto University, has an adjunct clinical professorship at Stanford, is an affiliate professor at UC Berkeley, and continues to provide his services at San Francisco General Hospital.
