- Bishop Desmond Tutu speaks on apartheid at Stanford's Memorial Auditorium on the occasion of the first national Martin Luther King Day holiday. He emphasizes the necessity of the United States issuing economic sanctions against South Africa, saying that blacks are willing to suffer economically in order to receive the political rights they have been denied.
