Sergio Garcia : Estánfor: Our Voices
Abstract/Contents
- Abstract
- In this oral history, Sergio Garcia (BA International Relations, 1983) shares his family history and values and talks about his experiences as a Stanford student, including living in Casa Zapata, studying abroad in Lima, Peru, dancing in Ballet Folklórico, and explaining the significance of Cinco de Mayo to his fellow students. He reflects on the challenges he faced as an undergraduate and offers advice to other first-generation college students. Garcia describes the emphasis his family placed on education and how that influenced him as a child. He also recalls how growing up in South Central, Los Angeles, made him aware of the struggles marginalized peoples face when trying to improve their quality of life. He remembers the nervousness he felt coming to Stanford as well as the sense of community and comfort he found at Casa Zapata. Garcia mentions playing intramural basketball, the pride of dancing in Ballet Folklórico, having his own talk show on the radio station, KZSU, and writing for the Chicano student newspaper, La Onda. He thanks the late Arturo Islas, a Stanford alum and early Chicano faculty member, for his mentorship. Garcia also recalls studying abroad in Lima, Peru, and traveling throughout Latin America, experiences he shared with his new bride. He speaks on the lack of diversity he still sees in the corporate world today. Thus, asked to offer advice for current first-generation students, he says, “remain authentic” and “feel a sense of belonging without necessarily having to give up who you are.” After Stanford, Sergio Garcia earned his JD at Berkeley Law School. He currently works as a general counsel, executive officer, board member and trusted advisor to CEOs and boards of directors.
