Abstract/Contents
- Abstract
- In this joint interview with his spouse Ken Ahonen-Jover, Juan Ahonen-Jover (PhD Electrical Engineering, 1985; MS, Engineering Management, 1984) describes growing up in Barcelona, Spain, and shares memories of the LGBTQ community at Stanford in the 1980s, including gatherings at the firehouse and his reaction to the defacement of George Segal’s Gay Liberation sculpture in 1984. He also describes his recruitment to Bell Labs, reflects on how gay people were viewed in corporate settings at the time, and talks about founding Silicon Design Experts. Ken describes meeting Juan while volunteering with the Gay Men’s Health Crisis in New York. Together with Juan, he recalls the US Supreme Court decision to legalize same-sex marriage in 2015. They go on to describe their philanthropy, including founding eQualityGiving.org, an online community dedicated to legal equality, their support of President Barack Obama’s re-election campaign, and their decision to endow a fellowship through the Haas Center for Public Service to support student innovations in human rights.
