Jim Kolbe : The Stanford Pride Oral History Project
Abstract/Contents
- Abstract
- Jim Kolbe (1967 MBA Graduate School of Business) speaks about his life and his time in Washington, DC, as a gay congressman and member of the Republican Party. Kolbe describes growing up on a ranch in Arizona, serving as a US Senate Page, and his naval tour of duty in Vietnam. He recalls coming to terms with his identity as a gay man and coming out to the world while casting his vote for the Defense of Marriage Act in 1996. He shares memories of the support he received from colleagues, including Senator John McCain, at that time and comments on how the AIDS epidemic affected those close to him. He concludes the interview by sharing advice to LGBTQ+ youth. Kolbe married his longtime partner Hector Alfonso in 2013 after the Supreme Court legalized same-sex marriage.
