Saint Michael the Archangel
Abstract/Contents
- Description
- Giovanni di Paolo (Siena, c. 1430) Saint Michael the Archangel (210 x 110 mm) in an initial F. Partly hidden by the ornate form of the letter, Michael’s sword and arm are raised in mid-air to combat the devil nestled at his feet. Along with two related miniatures, probably all from the same choir book, this illumination is attributed by Miklos Boskovitz to Giovanni di Paolo, one of the most important Sienese painters who was active both as an illuminator and a panel painter in the first half of the fifteenth century. In its highly individualistic combination of northern late Gothic formulae and Lombard elements, this elegant illumination with its sinuous drapery and metallic forms compares to those painted by Giovanni di Paolo early in his career in the 1430’s in the superb Antiphonal for the Augustinian hermitage of Lecceto. Provenance: James Dennistoun and Kenneth Clark.
