Estelle Freedman : Interview for Stanford Community Women's March Oral History Project
Abstract/Contents
- Abstract
<html>Estelle Freedman, the Edgar E. Robinson Professor in U.S. History at Stanford, discusses her trip to the Women’s March on Washington in January 2017. She provides a detailed commentary of her journey to the march with family members and her experience of the day, contrasting it with her memories of an anti-Vietnam War march that she attended in the city. She offers thoughts on the multi-generational nature of the march, its degree of diversity, and its creativity; and she responds to criticisms of the march. Freedman describes how, with colleague Allyson Hobbs, she helped to coordinate the Stanford Community Marchers, a group of students, staff, and others who desired to travel to Washington DC to attend the march. She speaks about the group’s pre-march preparations and post-march actions, including the launch of the Stanford Women’s Action Network (SWAN).
A member of the Stanford Department of History faculty since 1976, Freedman’s work focuses on the history of women, the history of sexuality, and feminist studies. She is a co-founder of the Stanford Program in Feminist, Gender, and Sexuality Studies and the author of numerous books and articles, including No Turning Back: The History of Feminism and the Future of Women (2002), Intimate Matters: A History of Sexuality in America (3d ed. 2012), and Redefining Rape: Sexual Violence in the Era of Suffrage and Segregation (2013).</html>
