- Abstract
- Biologist Pat Jones served as chair of the faculty senate in 1993-94, vice-chair in 1988-89, and as representative from the School of Humanities & Sciences Natural Sciences unit during many terms. In the first part of this interview, she provides a general sense of how the senate works, the relationship between the senate and university administration, and the types of issues that have come before the body. She describes how the Steering Committee sets the agenda for the senate and provides insight on the role played by the Committee on Committees, the Planning and Policy Board, and the academic secretary. Jones also comments favorably on the development of the Faculty Policy on Conflict of Commitment and Interest, a policy that came before the senate during her service. In the second part of the interview, Jones briefly discusses a time when students advocating for an Asian American Studies program disrupted a senate meeting. She describes the manner in which the senate handles routine business, including the renewal of existing interdepartmental programs, routine committee reports, and memorial resolutions. She describes some of the electoral procedures of the senate and speaks about how the senate came to hear an annual report on women and minority faculty and how the senate approved the Medical Center Line.
