| Abstract (English) | Raul Kuutma remembers his upbringing, his family and life in a coastal area of Estonia. Talks about the Soviet occupation of 1940-1941: elections, Komsomol and mobilization. Recalls his life during the Nazi German occupation of 1941-1944, the Omakaitse (‘home guard’) and Nazi German mobilizations of 1943 and 1944. Recalls time as a soldier in the Finnish Infantry Regiment 200 in 1943-1944 (equipment, training and fighting on the Karjala front). Talks about his return to Estonia and fighting against the Red Army in August of 1944. Talks about desertion from the army, and life in Estonian SSR. |
