Eric Elkin : The Stanford Pride Oral History Project
Abstract/Contents
- Abstract
- Eric Elkin graduated from Stanford with a BA degree in Human Biology in 1988. In this interview, he shares what it was like navigating his gay identity at Stanford and in the San Francisco Bay Area. He begins by describing his upbringing in a Jewish family in Los Angeles. He recalls news coverage of protests against the Briggs Initiative, a 1978 ballot initiative that proposed banning gay people from working in California’s public schools. Reflecting on his Stanford years, he talks about coming out to friends and family, connecting with the gay community, dating, and attending meetings of the Gay and Lesbian Alliance at Stanford. He describes working with the Cowell Health Center on sex education campaigns, shares his reaction to the vandalism of a George Segal statue on campus in 1984, and reflects on life and loss during the HIV/AIDS epidemic, including assisting with an AIDS research study in San Francisco. He concludes with reflections on his involvement with the Stanford Pride alumni group and the political climate around LGBT issues in the United States.
