Kalenah Witcher
Abstract/Contents
- Abstract
- Kalenah Witcher graduated from Stanford in 1991 with a BA in psychology and Honor’s in education. In this oral history, she talks about her experiences as a black Muslim woman studying at Stanford, including her decision not to cover herself while at college. She recalls being welcomed by Robert Gregg, the dean of Memorial Chapel, on her first day and the feeling of belonging it gave her; and how she eventually connected with other Muslims at Stanford.Witcher mentions the connections she made to the black community living in Ujamaa, working on the Black Community Services Center Policy Board, and being in the Black Student Union. She describes how the Otero Incident and Loma Prieta earthquake brought the class of 1991 closer together. After Stanford, Witcher attended the State University of New Jersey for her PhD and currently works to help start conversations about what communities and the nation can do to “propel and protect” African Americans.
