Sea of Cortez Expedition, La Paz
Abstract/Contents
- Abstract
- Part of expedition through the Sea of Cortez to follow the 1940 voyage traveled by author John Steinbeck and marine biologist Ed Ricketts. The vessel Gus D was crewed by chief scientist William Gilly, professor of biological sciences at Stanford's Hopkins Marine Station; zoologist Chuck Baxter, lecturer emeritus at Hopkins; Frank Donahue, owner and skipper of the Gus D; Jon Christensen, freelance journalist and cruise coordinator; Nancy Burnett, marine scientist, photographer and Stanford alumna; Mark Shwartz, and Sue Malinowski, cook.
- From first hand account:
- As we arrive in La Paz, scientists continue their work aboard the Gus D, cataloging and identifying different marine organisms gathered during the expedition – including various algae species collected by Nancy Burnett. Unlike Cabo San Lucas, the city of La Paz has managed to preserve its shoreline ecosystem, as a trip to a rocky beach reveals.
